My car makes this annoying buzzing noise when letting off throttle at about 3000 RPM. I haven’t been able to find any thing in the car or in the engine bay that rattles, and it seems to only happen on the road.

Kinja'd!!!

So I looked up the issue on the Sonic owners forum and found one similar report. He said his dealer found a service bulletin about it. The repair? New turbo.

Updates to come.

Came hoping to see someone correcting you about that being an alternator. Left disappointed. (I know about the meme).

Turbo and trap oxidizer went out on my ‘87 300D - Mercedes replaced it all for nothing.

The forum post seemed to imply a wastegate problem, which would make sense: off throttle, coming from airbox area. I assume the turbo was replaced because it’s an assembly with the wastegate.

I hope they upgrade you to the 120 amp turbo.

If they tell you to pound sand, I’m sure some basic welding skills, a CXRacing 76mm turbo, HPTuners software, and a cheap external wastegate say that you’ll be eating Stage 2 bugeye, blobeye, and hawkeye WRXs left, right, and centre.

If there’s a TSB (technical service bulletin) they should fix it for free.

Was this recently? I wouldn’t expect a manufacturer to give three fucks about a car from so long ago.

I’d love it if they did though, I really would.

Should be free no matter what, Powertrain warranty still good

That would be true, but they could deny coverage since you recalibrated your engine

Says who? I think you’ll find my car is on the factory calibration.

I don’t know about GM ECU’s but many can count key cycles since flashes...

most dealers probably don’t check, some don’t even care. YMMV

So you’re saying I should turn it off and on again a bunch of times.

They’ve never commented on my tune, and I had it in for a misfire once. I’m not too worried about it.

yes, definitely. haha

Some places really don’t care, or even look. Furthermore, it doesn’t even matter for a lot of things, your coil pack failing is a good example. A different calibration is probably not going to cause that.

If they aren’t careful it can send EGT’s through the roof and damage a turbo though.

I’m confused... why you let off throttle at 3000rpm? Needle goes to at least 7k. You make car sad, so it crys and you give it a rattle to stop crying. Redlines are for happiness :) no more rattle.

/s btw

But I redline at 6500...

Unfortunately that’s not always true. Recalls = free, TSBs aren’t always. I work in a service department that coordinates with a lot of other dealerships of different brands, and unfortunately TSBs all too frequently come with a price when the car is out of warranty.

That’s true - I’d forgotten that aspect. I think I had a good enough relationship with the Mercedes, Toyota, and Ford dealerships of my last few cars to where they gave me a call. Never had a TSB repair denied, to the best of my memory.
